To iMac or not to iMac ?

Have you seen the latest iMac’s released from Apple? If not, then you need to go and check it out.

Here at Aquafruit Media, we love almost all things Mac, and the new iMac is no exception, and to sum up one of the most advantageous parts using Apple, the following is a list of articles (from Apple) that are worthy of a read.

Big Fan’s
At Aquafruit, we are also a fan of the Apple products. Without a doubt, Aperture and the iLife suite top our list, not to mention the core operating system (currently Tiger).

Aperture as a product is awesome. Minor or major photographic changes and publishing to both web and dvd formats within minutes make Aperture well worth the purchase price. More information on Aperture can be found here.

iLife – the suite is mainly attractive for the end user who likes to dabble within the creative areas. But, it’s also a powerhouse of applications for the true media professional as well. More information on iLife can be found here.

At Aquafruit, we are mainly Mac users (within our design and general admin departments) and Microsoft users within some of our hosting and development areas. Why? Lower total cost of ownership. No viruses, no registry editing or hacks, no spyware, no blue screen of death etc, the Mac’s are simple, straight forward, reliable and exceptionally good for producing results. A plus in day to day business. Having said that, it’s horses for courses within the office environment.

Horses for Courses.
Having personally working within the I.T. industry for over 10 years (from the windows 3.1 days an onwards) with a background in technical support, Consulting and Management, the solutions that Aquafruit provides for it’s clients (and internally within Aquafruit) are driven from three main questions. These are:

  • 1) What services are required?
  • 2) What solution provides the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) including ongoing maintenance and support?
  • 3) What solution provides the best value for money?

It should be noted, that TCO encompasses a lot of different areas of the business as well. Not only from a technical perspective, but also from an end user knowledge perspective, application solutions provided, training and more.

Desktop market
In the day to day desktop market, our solutions tend to lean towards the Mac as a standard desktop platform for SMB’s/SME’s. This is obviously dependant on the solutions required, the level of skills within the organisation and the total long term outcomes required, but the the Mac desktop (iMac, Mac Book, Mac Book Pro etc) provides a solution where Aquafruit Technical staff are not required very often, which is good for our clients.

(Many people may find this a strange comment to make. After all, in business isn’t is more advantageous to up sell and cross sell into your existing clientele as much as possible? Sure, but it needs to be done ethically and with a Value Add for our clients. At the end of the day, it is our clients that determine when and where we are needed. Not inaccurate solutions.)

Server Market
In the SMB/SME server market, Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) and OS X Tiger Server are good solid solutions. Whilst OS X server will provide a better dollar value and lower TCO, SBS has additional benefits (such as Outlook Web Access and Remote Desktop over https://) out of the box. More on this in a different article.

The new iMac’s – love it or hate it.
There is a lot of cool stuff to love about the new iMac’s, but this really sums it up.
iMac vs PC

Less cables, a better, cleaner work environment and more productivity! – Awesome.
At Aquafruit Media, we recommend Apple and Apple products to our clients, partners and staff.

If you are involved in day to day decision making and haven’t looked into an Apple based solution, then, in our opinion, you are not doing justification to the company you work in, your employee’s and the bottom line of your business.

We welcome any and all feedback.
