Turnkey, motivation, driving force …All of these words sum up one thing in my mind.
Success.
A little background.
As per the last article posted, I have been a fan of Anthony Robbins for a long, long time. After buying a copy of personal power and reading “awaken the Giant within” and a few other books, I decided to take a journey through Europe in 2003 to explore my own head and answer a few questions.
It was a difficult time, due to a relationship break up, crap financial and work related decisions and other stuff. It was also a huge change on my life and was one of the better decisions I have made.I decided to go in August of 2003. By September of 2003, I had booked my plain tickets to Barcelona, Spain. Booked my flight out from France, and had no commitments in between at all. No commitments and no destinations planned.
A lot of time on a plane, train and a camel can clear your head. Especially, landing in Barcelona on a Friday night, with no accommodation, no destination and with just a little bit of Aussie/Queens English language (no Spanish). Challenging to say the least.
After 9 weeks of traveling through Spain, North Africa and France, I land back in Aussie on the 2nd of January 2004 with no job, no accommodation and little money.
Spending a lot of time with one self does either of two things.
- drive you nuts
- you end up learning a lot about yourself.
I chose the second option.
Leadership & Motivation
As a director of a company, the keys to motivation are always useful tools. The need to put yourself into a position of clear focus for decision making, peak performance & the correct choices are top priority. Good judgement and a clear strategy for placement are also mandatory requirements to be able to lead and mentor effectively & consistently.
Knowing your outcome can make a huge difference in the day to day choices that a company director makes. Foresight (as much as possible), hindsight (the educational curve) and perception also play important parts.
For me, motivation comes from two main sources.
- The will to contribute and better myself, my surroundings, my life in general &
- The necessity to see things through.
Having worked in small business for over 10 years, it is clear that contribution is by far the biggest push towards success. Contribution to myself, my clients, their businesses, my staff (being able to motivate staff should also be on the top of the list. After all, your small business is only as good as the employee’s who make it work), my family, my pets and more. Obviously, my contribution is delivered in many shapes, sizes and forms, but it is contribution nonetheless, and more often than not, ‘good’ & consistent contribution.
It’s incredibly difficult to lead if you are not motivated internally, if you don’t have or produce that inner drive to succeed or if you let life reek it’s often blunt, “need to be taught a lesson” revenge on you. (Sounds pretty harsh doesn’t it?). Leading and contribution go hand in hand to produce and create a lasting environment of motivation, achievement & for me, success.
Seeing things through to the end has always been a challenge for me up. Recently I was reminded again through working in my last full time job how important it is to not only add value through ideas, brain storming and contribution, but to also drive and deliver these ideas, solutions, and contributions completely – all the way through from end to end. The realization and satisfaction are outstanding when projects are delivered, especially the larger ones.
In terms of motivation, there are a lot of different ways for people to become motivated, stay motivated, and perform in a motivated fashion. To break these down into a more useful tangible way, I would recommend reading the following:
- Unleash the giant within (Anthony Robbins)
- 7 Habit’s of highly effective people (Stephen Covey)
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motivation
Along the path of leadership & contribution, you will often come across motivation & hopefully be inspired by the outcome and the achievements of your accomplishments. But, is there more than this?
Anthony Robbins seems to think so. Let’s examine this in our next credibility article.
